Apple today announced that it nearly doubled the number of suppliers who have committed to manufacture its products using 100 percent clean energy. The number of Apple suppliers who are now using 100 percent clean energy now stands at 44.
Apple has also exceeded its own goal of using more than 4 gigawatts of renewable energy in its supply chain by 2020. The number now stands at 5 gigawatts thanks to the partnership.
Apart from Foxconn, Wistron, new suppliers that have joined Apple’s Green Initiative include TSMC, Corning, Compal Electronics, STMicroelectronics, and more.
“Every time one of our suppliers joins us in our efforts to address climate change, we move closer to a better future for the next generation,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives. “We’ve made it a priority to hold our suppliers accountable to the same environmental standards we observe and hope that our collaboration will show others what is possible. While we are proud of our announcement today, we won’t stop driving change within our industry to support the clean energy transition happening globally.”
Just last year around this time, Apple announced that all of its own global facilities are powered by 100 percent renewable energy.
Additionally, Apple also announced that it has allocated the entirety of its $2.5 billion Green Bonds to around 40 environmental initiatives across the world. Nearly 66 percent of the renewable energy used by Apple comes from initiatives where Apple has allocated its Green Bonds.
It is important to note that the move from Apple suppliers does not mean that they are entirely running their operations on renewable energy. Instead, they are only using renewable and clean energy for the production of Apple products. They continue to rely on other sources of electricity for the production of other OEMs.
